- II. LOADING:
- Laserjet can be invoked on of two ways:
- 1. As a stand alone program.
- From the DOS prompt type LASERJET <RETURN>; the
- program will present the main menu.
- 2. As a memory resident program
- From the DOS prompt type LASERJET /L <RETURN>
- This loads Laserjet into your computer's memory,
- setting aside 79Kb of memory for its exclusive use. A
- short message will be displayed, if all goes well,
- informing you of the current "HotKey" -- the key used
- to invoke Laserjet from within you other applications.
-
- III. COMMAND SELECTION
- Selecting a main menu item and pressing <RETURN> invokes
- a sub-menu. Alternately, pressing the first letter of
- the main menu item will access the appropriate sub-menu.
- Similarly, the sub-menu can be accessed either by
- selecting the item with the cursor keys and pressing
- <RETURN> or by selecting the CAPITALIZED letter of the
- appropriate selection.
- e.g. <P> from the main menu pulls down the "Primary"
- sub-menu; <P> from the "Primary sub-menu" sets the
- font to "line pr Portrait".
-
- IV. THE ESC KEY:
- Pressing <Esc> from any selection prompt aborts the
- command; from any sub-menu it returns to the main menu;
- from the main menu it Quits the program.
-
- V. THE MENUS:
- 1. Primary and Secondary
- The Laserjet allows TWO fonts to be selected at any given
- time. However, only ONE is "active".
- The fonts supported under these menus are:
-
- 1) Times roman 10pt
- 2) Courier
- 3) Elite
- 4) Gothic
- 5) Helvetica 14pt - sets to
- 6) times Roman 8pt - sets to tiny proportional spaced
- font
- 7) line pr Portrait - sets to 16.66 pitch in portrait
- orientation
- 8) line pr Landscape - sets to 16.66 pitch in landscape
- orientation
- 9) Bold - sets bold
- 10) Italic - sets italic
- 11) Active - switches to primary or secondary font
-
- 2. Miscellaneous
- 1) Reset printer - set to powerup defaults.
- 2) Eject current page
- 3) Manual feed - activate manual feed (this can also be
- done manually)
- 4) Cassette feed - activate casette feed
- 5) Wrap lines - lines that extend into the non-printing
- area will be wrapped to the next line.
- 6) Dont wrap lines - lines that extend into the
- non-printing area will be cut short.
- 7) Number of copies - select the number of copies to
- print of the next document.
- 8) Page length - specifies the page length in number of
- lines (using the currently selected line spacing);
- lines per inch x inches per page.
- 9) Send custom code - this option allows you to edit a
- printer code and send it to the printer. Once
- you have created a "custom code" you can save it
- to disk as a permanent part of Laserjet by
- selecting Save setup under the Options menu.
- 10) Font Example - prints a short test at the current
- settings. This shows font, margins, pitch, etc.
-
- 3. Format
- 1) Left margin - sets the number of spaces, at the
- currently selected pitch, to offset the left margin.
- 2) Right margin - sets the number of characters per
- line, at currently selected pitch.
- 3) Top margin - sets the number of lines to skip from
- the top of the page; uses the currently selected
- number of lines per inch.
- 4) Clear margins - clears all margin settings to
- powerup defaults.
- 5) Print pitch - sets the print pitch. This setting
- uses Horizontal Spacing and overrides the normal
- pitch for the selected font. This allows you to
- print Courier at 12 pitch, or Elite at 10 pitch.
- Enter the pitch - the number of characters per inch.
- NOTE: when using proportional space fonts, only
- the SPACE character is affected by the Pitch
- commnad. The result is that the characters are
- no closer together (or further apart), but the
- words are.
- 6) lines per Inch
- 7) Sixty-six lines - many IBM programs that cannot be
- controlled by the HP Laserjet assume that a normal
- page can print 66 lines per inch. The Laserjet, in
- default mode, prints 62 lines per page, 6 lines per
- inch. This option sets the Laserjet to print 66
- lines per page by creating slightly larger than
- normal top and bottom margins, and slightly smaller
- vertical increments between lines.
- 8) Fifty-one lines - This setting is useful if you are
- printing in landscape mode.
- 9) Eighty-six lines - this setting is only useful if
- you are printing on legal sized paper.
-
- 4. Export
- 1) Edit labels - create a new envelope; this option
- allows you to edit five lines of return address
- and five lines of addressee. Press <Esc> to
- return to the Edit menu. The label remains in
- memory. You can then save it to a file or print
- it.
- 2) Load labels - loads a previously edited and saved
- label file.
- 3) Save labels - saves the label currently in memory
- to disk.
- 4) Print labels - prints the label currently in
- memory.
- 5) Notepad - a 66 line notepad. See below for
- details
-
- 5. Dos Commands
- 1) Directory - shows a directory
- 2) Logged dir - changes currently active path
- 3) Copy - copies a file; be sure there is enough space on
- the target diskette.
- 4) Rename - rename a DOS file
- 5) Erase - erase a DOS file
- 6) Free space - check free disk space on a specified drive
- 7) Print file - send a file to the Laserjet. See below
- for details.
-
- 6. Options
- 1) LaserJet v. 4.4 - displays address for contributions
- 2) Unload LaserJet - unloads the memory resident version
- of Laserjet and frees the memory it had set aside.
- WARNING: this must ONLY be invoked from the DOS
- command line. If you invoke this command (and
- answer yes to the Continue? question) while you are
- inside an application program, you will be dumped to
- DOS and any unsaved work will be lost.
- 3) HotKey: Alt-F10 - shows the current HotKey, and
- allows you to change it.
- Valid HotKey possibilities are:
- a. Alt F1 - F10
- b. Shift F1-F10
- c. Ctrl F1-F10
- d. Alt 1-0,-,=
- 4) Mono CG - No - displays the current setting for whether or
- not you are using a monochrome graphics screen. Laserjet
- can determine if you have a Monochrome or Graphics adaptor.
- It sets the display colors and attributes accordingly.
- However, the color settings are sometimes difficult to see
- on a graphics system that has a monochrome display. Setting
- this option to "Yes" changes the colors to monochrome even
- on a graphics screen. This setting can be saved to disk by
- selecting Save setup.
- 5) Save setup - saves the currently active Hotkey and
- MonoCG settings permanently to disk so that the next
- time you invoke Laserjet with the "/L" parameter, these
- customized settings will be the new defaults. This
- will also save the current "custom code" from the
- Miscellaneous menu.
- In order for Laserjet to create a new version of
- itself, containing the customized HotKey, the MonoCG
- variable, and the current custom code, program must
- reside in the currently active directory (you can
- change directory under Dos commands), and must be
- named LASERJET.COM.
-

- order to turned off formatting. (e.g.
- <alt-u>anyword<alt-u>)
- 4) Alt-S - makes Secondary font active for the words
- that follow until Alt-P is encountered.
- 5) Alt-P - makes Primary font active again after an
- Alt-S (e.g. <alt-s>This would be secondary font
- <alt-p>and this in primary).
-
- 4. Notes on the Notepad:
- 1) Landscape (Alt-L or Alt-E) orientation will be reset to
- portrait upon exiting the TypeWriter.
- 2) If you try to load an ascii file larger than 66 lines
- LaserJet will read the first 66 lines and then stop.
- Avoid this.
- 3) Nothing will be sent to the LaserJet until you select
- Print (F6)
- 4) With Version 4.3 of Laserjet, the text currently inside the
- notepad remains in memory even if you exit to the Main Menu.
- This allows you to type a memo, reset printer fonts or
- margins, return to the notepad to print.
- The text of the notepad will remain available until
- 1) You Clear the page with F9.
- 2) You exit the non-memory resident version of Laserjet.
- 3) You load another memo from disk.
-
- VII. Printing a file through Laserjet
- 1. The Print command, under Dos commands sub-menu - prints an
- ASCII file to the LaserJet in either portrait (55 lines
- per page) or landscape (47 lines per page), with page
- number and optional header (consisting of filename).
- At this time, Laserjet will NOT print WordStar files.
- 2. Note: The Landscape option of the Print commad sets the
- right hand margin (line length) to 160. This enables
- you to take advantage of the Line Printer Font (16.6
- cpi) on cartrige 92286B. If, however, you are only
- using the in ROM landscape Font (Courier 10 cpi), be
- aware that any characters beyond 80 (minus left margin)
- will not be printed.
- 3. The left margin is left at 0 for both portrait and landscape
- under the Print command. You can set it manually using
- the Offset command.
- 4. There is now an option to print at either 6 lines per inche
- or 8 lines per inch. In portrait mode, 6 lines per
- inch will print 58 textlines; 8 lines per inch will
- print 78 textlines. In landscape mode, 6 lpi will
- print 46 textlines; 8 lpi will print 58.
- 5. A complete RESET will be performed if Print was activated in
- Landscape mode; Otherwise Font selections will remain
- as selected before entering Print and lines per page
- will remain as selected for printing.
